School-Day Field Trips
We provide year-round activities for K-8 grade youth through school-day field trips to our sites. All field trips include:
One hour of guided hands-on, curriculum-based investigations and experiments in physical, life and earth sciences, and construction projects
One half hour of unstructured exploration time to interact with our permanent exhibits, help care for our animals, and explore our expansive collection of bones, instruments, fossils, and energy projects.
Our field trips activities align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and include; cracking shale rocks to find and identify fossils; building electromagnet speakers; assembling animal bone puzzles to discover animal locomotion systems; dissecting squid; and constructing fan-powered circuit cars.
Monday through Friday we host several types of afterschool programs at our workshops with: community groups at our neighborhood schools, parent-organized groups, and a drop-in program.
As in the field trips, these groups have time for free exploration of the workshop as well as guided activities, experiments and projects. The big difference in these programs is that they are less constrained by the schools curriculums field trips, and often designed by the students’ own interests.
In our afterschool programs students can build planters for their home gardens, make electricity using nothing more than pennies, cardboard and salt water, create motorized toys of every shape and size, or design their own instruments.
So you aren’t a part of a classroom or group, but still want to visit? We would love to have you, and have several (free!) drop-in programs for you to come and participate. During these programs, we open our doors to the community, where scientists of all ages can explore our space at no cost. All drop-in programs run Sept - May.

Science doesn’t stop with the school year, and neither do we! MSW collaborates with an variety of community organizations to provide summer programming for K-5th grade students; running from June through early July. These programs meet anywhere from 1-5 times in a week, and last several hours.
As with our after school programs, the increased frequency and duration provide greater flexibility, and a deeper engagement with the project material. Another parallel is that these activities are less curriculum based, and more geared towards self guided exploration and construction.
